Workshop Description:

This workshop is designed to address the concerns of those wishing to apply the 1994 edition of the ISO 9001 standard within a software environment.  This workshop covers the 20 elements of the standard with special attention given to the management practices of software development and software maintenance.

Learn the background, purpose, scope and benefits of ISO 9001.  The role of ISO 9000-3 and TickIT are discussed.  Provided are opportunities to discuss critical success factors (CSFs) of using ISO 9001 as a model for software process improvement including common pitfalls and how to avoid them.  The process for obtaining ISO 9001 registration through a third party registration body is described including guidance on how to choose the right registrar for your software organization.

Workshop Goals:

1. Learn about the ISO family of standards relevant to the software industry.
2. Discover the role, structure and potential of the ISO 9000 series of standards.
3. Learn the fundamentals of implementing a quality system that is compliant with ISO 9001 and effective for your specific software environment.
4. Discover the strengths and weaknesses of applying various interpretation guides applicable to the software industry such as AS 3563, ISO 9000-3, and TickIT.
5. Obtain knowledge on the value of combining ISO 9001 with other standards/models like ISO 12207, ISO 15504 (SPICE) and SEI SW-CMM.
