"Applying internal audits / assessments
as a tool for software business improvement"

Duration:
3 days

This course can be combined with the course:
Strengthening your audit/assessment skills
(duration of the two combined courses is 5 days)

Recommended Participants:
Anyone soon to be responsible for
managing or conducting internal audits/assessments
regarding software development and its support.

Note:  This workshop does not focus on conducting 3rd party external
compliance audits/assessments against standards/models like ISO 9001,
ISO 15504 and SEI SW-CMM.  For this type of training, refer to
QAI/SPICE, SEI CBA-IPI and SEI SCE certified courses.

Workshop Description:

This workshop is both an introduction and how to type course.  The workshop explains the fundamentals of auditing/assessing a software organization.  The differences of external versus internal evaluations and audits verses assessments; are discussed.  Primary focus is on how to manage and conduct internal audits/assessments for the purpose of encouraging software business improvement as oppose to only compliance evaluation against standards.

This workshop trains participants the basic skills, recommended process and activities to effectively evaluate (audit/assess) and trouble shoot your own software operation.  Two software environment scenarios are covered -- first, auditing/assessing against documented requirements (e.g., your own project/process documentation,...) and second, auditing/assessing an ad hoc software/project organization.

Basic tools and techniques to conducting audits/assessments (such as basic questioning techniques) are covered--see Strengthening your audit/assessment skills for a workshop that enhances these skills.

Workshop Goals:

1. Discover the basic stages and criteria to create an effective internal audit/assessment system and process including auditor/assessor ethics, qualification and scope/team selection.
2. Examine the basic requirements and software business improvement value of applying appraisal methods/processes compliant with: ISO 10011, ISO 15504, SEI CBA-IPI, and/or SEI SCE.
3. Learn tools and techniques to managing internal audits/assessments including that required for 1st party and 2d party evaluations.
4. Learn tools and techniques for conducting internal audits/assessments including that required for preparation, announcement, execution, reporting and follow-up activities.
5. Discover games played and how to diffuse them.
6. Discover how to obtain management support.
