ISO 15504 (SPICE)
-- Why another standard/model?
|
-
"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of
choice:
-
it is not a thing to be waited for,
-
it is a thing to be achieved."
-
-- William Jennings Bryan
The ISO 15504 (SPICE) model is still considered in
its infancy--the ISO 15504 model was released as a technical report
in
1998--it is not yet released as an official standard.
Many people are asking questions--the key question being "why another
standard/model?"
One of the primary benefits that ISO 15504 provides is the ability to
compare apples against apples. As a customer, you will be
able to judge "an organization assessed under the SEI SW-CMM model against
an organization assessed under, say, the Trillium or Bootstrap model".
In view of the software vendor, you need not change your software process
improvement model of choice (e.g., SEI SW-CMM, Trillium, Bootstrap,...)
nor do you need to re-educate your Software Engineering Process Group on
any new assessment framework.
Sound too good to be true? Well, this is how ISO 15504 permits
this to occur:
 |
ISO 15504 has 2 standards:
| -- |
ISO 15504-2 |
is a common base for different software process improvement
models |
| -- |
ISO 15504-3 |
is the minimum requirements for performing assessments |
|
 |
Existing
software process improvement models (like SEI SW-CMM,
Trillium,...) need only be cross-referenced with ISO 15504-2 -- note: SEI
has already released a high-level
cross-reference |
 |
Existing assessment frameworks (like SEI CBA-IPI, SEI SCE, or a consultant's
own assessment framework) need only be cross-referenced with ISO 15504-3.
Note, the FAA has already cross-referenced their FAA-iCMM® Appraisal
Method. |
 |
Having cross-referenced your assessment framework and software process
improvement model of choice, comparing
apples against apples is
then possible! |
Now, that is worth another standard/model. Do you not agree?
